Manchester Folk Festival 2026: Botanical Dyeing

With Claire Mellalieu

Friday 20th March, 2pm - 5pm

Manchester Craft and Design Centre

Part of Manchester Folk Festival 2026, presented in partnership with Manchester Craft and Design.

Join us for a fun and hands-on workshop where you’ll learn the art of creating beautiful silk scarves using natural botanical dyes! The session will begin with a brief introduction to the designer and their journey into botanical dyeing. Guests will then have the opportunity to dye their own square silk scarf using the Bundle Dyeing technique, a natural method that creates stunning botanical prints from flowers, petals, leaves, and extract dyes.

After the dyeing process, the bundles will be steamed to draw out and fix the colour. The most exciting part will be the Big Reveal, where guests will unwrap their bundles and plant materials to discover their unique prints. Bundle dyeing is completely unpredictable, and that’s where the beauty lies!
