Kintsugi for Beginners
Workshop Leader: Amelia Jane Gilding
Saturday 16th May | 10.30am or 2pm
Discover the ancient art of Kintsugi with Amelia from Amelia Jane Gilding in a fun and creative way. Kintsugi, which literally translates as ‘golden joinery’, celebrates wabi-sabi (侘寂), the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection.
In this beginner’s workshop, you will:
– be given your own toolbox for use on the day, which will contain all the materials and items you need for this workshop.
– learn step-by-step how to safely break pottery and to repair it with gold, thereby embracing the cracks to make unique pieces of art.
– restore two ceramics with Kintsugi to take home, which make beautiful mementos of the day and can be used as ornaments or gifts.
Why this workshop is so special:
Kintsugi is a mindful, meditative art form that celebrates the beauty in imperfection. It is a relaxing, creative experience that you can share with others. Your Kintsugi ceramics are unique, personalised pieces of art that embrace the power of transformation.
Amelia has a Master’s degree in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Lincoln. She is a Gilt Frame, Objects, and Decorative Surfaces Conservator and Restorer and has worked in the Fine Arts sector for over 5 years, gaining extensive experience in restoring and conserving antiques. During this time, she worked with Kintsugi and developed the technique for beginners to enjoy this creative art.
