Artform/Specialisms: Jewellery and Collage
How would you describe the items you produce?
After hunting for old ephemera, particularly postcards, stamps and maps, I combine these unique finds with new handmade elements, for both my jewellery and collages.
My jewellery encompasses pieces that can be worn every day to items for special occasions and collectors items. I often make (both my jewellery and collages) using peoples personal trove of papers, embedded with their own personal history and meaning.
What are the things that have inspired, and continue to inspire, your work?
Hunting for unexpected treasure inspires my work and is my starting point. The ephemera pertains to people from our cities history, which you also get a sense of by wandering around our urban environment, layers of history, people and businesses that have gone before us, architectural and industrial details, and graffiti. The ephemera have become separated from their original meanings new imagined stories are created for these finds, as new pieces are coming together, and how they may now relate to their new owners.
When you are not producing new work, what do you like to spend your time doing and why?
My precious time off is for relaxation and quality time with loved ones! With the occasional (actually quite frequent!) vintage trip, or a visit to an exhibition. Since moving to Manchester in 2012 it has been nice to spend time exploring the City and beyond.
If you were asked to describe the experience of visiting Manchester Craft and Design Centre to someone who has yet to come along, what would you tell them?
A unique and intriguing opportunity to see makers making, to learn about their work, and discuss special commissions.
