Manchester Craft & Design Centre is once again participating in the Crafts Council’s Hothouse programme as a partner in the North Cohort. Other partners include Manchester Metropolitan University, The Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool, Yorkshire Artspace in Sheffield, Design Event in Newcastle upon Tyne and Creative Lancashire in partnership with University of Central Lancashire.

Hothouse provides emerging makers (within three years of setting up a practice or from graduation) with focussed, intensive business and creative development, complemented with 1:1 support over a six month period.

Kaylee Jenkinson, Exhibitions & Events Officer at MCDC and Hothouse panelist said, “We’re absolutely delighted to be a Hothouse Partner for the second year running. The support given to the participants is invaluable at the early stages of their careers, and we are proud to play a small part in that through offering our venue and expertise. Being part of Hothouse has also strengthened our connections with the Crafts Council as a whole, leading to us curating a popular and successful exhibition of Hothouse 5 particiapnts’ work, and our involvement in events such as Hey Clay!

The 41 makers selected this year already display a high level of technical craftsmanship and originality but the programme, which started in February, will equip them with the business and creative skills needed to run a successful and sustainable craft practice.

Amongst the makers selected for the North Cohort are jeweller Toby Cotterill, whose work was part of our Exploring Wonderland exhibition earlier this year, and two of our 2016 Future Makers, Lydia Mary (Surface Pattern/Textiles) and Kira Meyer (Glass).

Other makers include:

  • Sally Burnett, Wood, Staffordshire
  • Lauren Taylor, Jewellery, Stockport
  • Kate Whitehead, Textiles, Manchester
  • Sophie Thompson, Printed Textiles, Newbottle, Tyne & Wear
  • Richard Cullen, Ceramics, Morpeth
  • Sam Andrew, Ceramics, Manchester
  • Victoria Claire Dawes, Ceramics, Sheffield
