Welcome Back: Our Plans for Reopening

As of Monday 12th April will be open Monday – Saturday from 10am – 5.30pm. We’ve missed our customers these last few months (and one another!). There’s nothing quite like face-to-face interaction. It’s what inspires our Makers and our staff. If you’ve haven’t visited the Centre before, here’s a little bit of information about us and a
helpful guide on what to expect from your visit. Please note: The Centre will be closed on bank holidays.

For nearly 40 years, Manchester Craft & Design Centre has provided a home to some of the region’s most talented independent designers and makers. Selling textiles, jewellery, accessories, ceramics, glass, prints and homeware, each of the 20 studios offer much more than just a shopping experience. You can meet the makers behind the work, watch them create unique pieces by hand, and hear all about their skills and inspiration. From contemporary jewellery designers to printmakers, glass artists to ceramicists, there’s so much to discover on a visit to the centre.

Our beautiful building itself is worth a trip alone. Housed in a former Victorian fish and poultry market in the heart of the Northern Quarter, this light and airy space has retained some of its original features such as the fishmongers’ booths on the ground floor. The historic Smithfield fish market ceased trading in 1973 and was later converted into Manchester Craft Village by Manchester City Council. It opened its doors to the public back in 1982 and played a huge part in regenerating the city’s independent quarter. Over the years the Centre has championed gifted designers & makers, whether through its carefully selected studio artists, or its engaging exhibitions programme & public workshops.

We have put together a handy guide on what to expect from your trip so you can visit with confidence. We hope to see you soon!
