Manchester Craft & Design Centre Trustee positions available

Manchester Craft and Design is a truly unique charity, dedicated to its mission of being an unforgettable place to make, see and buy contemporary craft and design.

Nestled in the heart of the city’s thriving Northern Quarter, the historic Manchester Craft and Design Centre is home to 30+ inspirational resident makers who embody the very essence of creativity. An Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation (ACE NPO), and open to the public six days a week, we offer a rich range of services including exhibitions, collaborative working partnerships and the incubation of emerging talent.

Due to trustee rotations we currently have three vacancies on our Board and are looking for outstanding, passionate and driven individuals who are committed to our mission and excited to join us at an important time of growth, opportunity and strategic ambition.

You will be advisors, enablers, champions and ambassadors. You will understand how to effectively support the work of our Executive Team, and the accountabilities of the charity trustee role, and be eager to share your knowledge and expertise. The Board plays a vital role in defining how the Centre contributes as a major cultural asset to the City of Manchester and the wider North West craft sector.

We are working towards a Board that is representative of the diversity of 21st century Britain, and that more closely reflects the diverse communities we work with and alongside. A personal love of the arts and learning is fundamental; as is a commitment to inclusion. At this time in our organisational journey, we’re particularly interested in hearing from people with skills, knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• Project management preferably in a capital build context
• Culture change / Change Management
• People who reflect the diversity of our community, particularly people with disabilities and/or from a BAME background
• Human Resources
• General legal / charity law

What difference will you make?
Within the progressive cultural landscape of Manchester; we’ve recently increased our NPO funding by 100% and gained charitable status; we’re ready to take on a future of possibilities. As we evolve we need trustees who can further develop relationships in our city, deepen our key partnerships, ensure governance excellence and bring vibrancy and energy to the organisation.

You will diversify our board skillset and enable us to strive towards a capital redevelopment, to tackle the immediate challenges of the retail environment and to shape our future within in the city.

What commitment is expected?
− Attendance at board meetings – currently 4-6 per year (including AGM & Resident Maker Q&A), with a commitment of 75% attendance
− Willingness to join subcommittees/working groups, meeting approx. 4 times per year (in addition to board meetings)
− Attendance at MCAD exhibition launches wherever possible
− Be an advocate and ambassador for MCAD
− Trustees serve for a maximum term of six years (or eight if elected as Chair).
− Candidates must have the right to work in the UK
− Trustees are not paid, however opportunities for personal development will be available
− Previous trustee experience, whilst beneficial, is not essential as support and mentoring is available for new trustees
