Your Name: Michelle Keeling
Name of Business: Michelle Keeling Glass
Artform/Specialisms: Contemporary kiln formed glass, including jewellery, interior accessories, wall panels, architectural glass and corporate art.
What are the things that have inspired, and continue to inspire, your work?
When I first started working with kiln formed glass, I was inspired by a glacier I had climbed in New Zealand. I worked with metal oxides and metal leaf to try to replicate the patterns I saw trapped deep within the ice. Over time these experiments evolved into the style of work I create today.
What is the most memorable (positive) reaction you have had from a customer to your work?
A couple spending the money they had saved up for a sofa on a set of my wall panels. They had only popped in to visit a fellow exhibitor at a show I was doing early on in my career, and decided that they could sit on bean bags for a little longer!
When you are not producing new work, what do you like to spend your time doing and why?
I have just become a mum for the first time, to a beautiful 9 month old daughter. Therefore life is filled with singing nursery rhymes and delighting in her little achievements!
If you were asked to describe the experience of visiting Manchester Craft & Design Centre to someone who has yet to come along, what would you tell them?
An eclectic mix of studios – offering a unique chance to see where, and how, contemporary craft is made, and get to know the makers behind the work.
