University of Bolton – Award Winners

Congratulations are in order…

We popped down to the University of Bolton Creative Degree Show, and we were very impressed with the work we saw and the infectious enthusiasm of their students. Every year we give out the Manchester Craft & Design Centre Award to students we have selected for their talent and potential from many applicants. The award is an opportunity to have a Pop-up showcase of the students’ work here at MCAD for 4 days, an event which will launch alongside our main September exhibition. This means their work will be seen by a wide range visitors to the centre, right in the heart of the creative Northern Quarter.

We are very pleased to announce that the first of our 2017 Award winners is Carys Lavin.

Carys is a designer maker based in Manchester who creates textile art and surface pattern led lighting solutions and textiles. She is fascinated by the idea of memories and how we remember things as memories fade and change. Using laser cutting and weaving techniques, she tells a story of how memories fall away but can be reconstructed differently, with her most recent work being influenced by the stunning John Rylands Library.

We really loved the style of the work and the story interwoven throughout her work and portfolio, with a beautiful display filled with many pieces which worked wonderfully together.

Well done Carys!

Our second winner is designer maker Tiffany Maksymow, a graduating student of Textile Surface Design & Fine Art. She has used herculite plaster, hand dye painting and machine embroidery to create her degree show pieces. Tiffany also uses hand drawn elements within her work to as she feels this shows her connection to what she is creating. Each piece has a personal narrative which invokes an emotion which can be translated to the audience upon request.

We loved Tiffany’s confidence and how her work really stood out. The combination of the plaster and embroidery worked very well, and all her work was presented stunningly.
