Susan Kane graduated from Manchester University with a 1st Class Hons degree in Textile Design, working extensively in the fashion & furnishing industries before establishing 'Calico Angel Textile Designs' here. Her enviable portfolio of clients includes Mary Quant, Monsoon, DKNY, & Ralph Lauren. Susans paintings & decorative pieces are inspired by her business trips to New York, Tokyo & Paris and the artefacts of these cities. The baroque architecture & subdued colours of Paris, the shimmering glass towers of New York & the traditionalism of Japan combine to provide a rich & unique mix of source material.
Susan established Calico Angel in 1999 to create and sell her textile designs independently. "Having spent 16 years designing for various London studios, including 3 years with Mary Quant, after making sales trips to America, Japan and Europe, I felt ready to branch out on my own."
Alongside the design work, Susan produce pictures. They have a simple narrative quality, exploring the placement of line, shape, colour and the sequences that emerge.
"Whether gathering family and friends for tea or gathering beautiful 1960's coffee pots, curious objects or lovely old picture frames from flea-markets, they are all things that inspire me... so after gathering my thoughts I have produced a new collection of pictures which tell of happy arrangements of pattern, image and line."
Clinton Pilkington originally established Holm at Manchester Craft & Design Centre after graduating in Fine Art & Sculpture at Salford University. Harnessing his exuberant artistic style with the skills and traditional methods of construction, he creates exciting modern furniture for a market often lacking individuality, at an affordable price.
Recognizing the complimentary nature of their work, Sue and Clint joined forces to create Calico Angel at Holm in April 2003, placing Clint's contemporary wood furniture & lighting range and Susans paintings, screens and interior pieces into a modern living room space. Their bespoke service enables customers to commission the highest quality individually created work, where the only limitation is their imagination!
