Science in the City

To celebrate Manchester being the first UK city to be designated European City of Science, a free week long festival – Science in the City – is taking place alongside the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF).

Biological Atelier: The Showroom

The year is 2082. Materials are not made, but grown; not fashioned from fabrics, but from cells. Our current exhibition is a showcase of work by designer/researcher Amy Congdon, and her explorations into how tissue engineering could be used to grow new biological textiles for the fashion industry. Make Design Grow! 

Young scientists are invited to design and grow their own ‘biological textiles’ using seeds. There will be a chance to look at how different environments affect their growth and consider whether this could be the future of how our clothes are made. More info here…

The Fabric of Research

Designers from the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University have worked with researchers from the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute and patient volunteers to create unique artworks that showcase their latest scientific advances and tell the personal journeys of people affected by cancer. A Science in the City special of our monthly Craft Unravelled tour.
