Alinah Azadeh – ‘The Gifts of the Departed’

23rd November – 1st March 2014

Manchester Craft & Design Centre are proud to announce their forthcoming exhibition, ‘The Gifts of the Departed’ – a solo show of work by UK-based interdisciplinary artist Alinah Azadeh‘The Gifts of the Departed’ is an on-going body of work, comprising objects which once belonged to her late mother. These objects are wrapped and bound in cloth, articulating separation, loss and longing. MCDC are delighted to be the first destination outside of the South of England to show this body of Azadeh’s work.

‘The Gifts of the Departed’ exhibition features a selection of Azadeh’s wrapped objects from 2009-2013. Azadeh is enchanted by the idea of textile as a metaphor for text and language, which is a dominant part of her work. Her creative practice is rooted in communal rituals and processes of wrapping and exchanging gifts. Azadeh describes her live work and installations as a space for self-reflection in response to the central themes of human experience.

The Gifts of the Departed’ will be open at Manchester Craft & Design Centre from Saturday 23 November 2013 – Saturday 1 March 2014.

Azadeh experienced the birth of her first child and the death of her mother in the Asian Tsunami in quick succession, which had a major impact on the direction of her sculptural and installation work. Azadeh’s ‘Gifts of the Departed’ collection gained its first major exposure through a commission for the national initiative ‘the shape of things’ in 2010. This culminated in her first UK show at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, featuring a suspended installation of 999 wrapped objects gifted to the artist by the public.

Born in 1968 to an Iranian mother and English father, Azadeh lives and works in Lewes, Sussex. Since gaining her MA in Art and Media Practice at the University of Westminster in 2001, Azadeh has focussed on creating installation works that combine objects, textiles, sculptures, data and written language. She is strongly influenced by her Iranian heritage, which has shaped her work through an emphasis on social connection, the sharing of stories through textiles, and the writing and teachings of the great Sufi poets such as Rumi and Hafez.

Kaylee Jenkinson, MCDC Exhibitions and Events Officer, comments: “We’re very excited to be hosting this exhibition of Alinah Azadeh’s work. Her striking wrapped sculptures combine both her love of cloth and textiles influenced by her Iranian heritage, and a deep sense of longing and remembering reflective of the loss of her mother. We feel honoured to be the first Northern venue to host Azadeh’s work, and are looking forward to the conversations which emerge from hosting this powerful and beautiful work.”

‘The Gifts of the Departed’ will open with a free, family friendly launch day between 1-5pm on Saturday 23 November.

This will be a chance to see the exhibition as well as experience the launch of MCDC’s Christmas season.
